The dark knight of Jalisco: Mexico’s ‘Batman’ hunts motorcycle thieves, leaves them taped to lampposts

The dark knight of Jalisco: Mexico's 'Batman' hunts motorcycle thieves, leaves them taped to lampposts

Mexico gets their own batman who targets bike thieves.

An unidentified vigilante dubbed the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” has reportedly neutralised at least five alleged motorcycle thieves in Jalisco state over the past 10 days, tying them to lampposts with tape and leaving stolen motorcycles nearby, according to local media reports. The incidents have been reported in Lagos de Moreno, a municipality in Jalisco, where photos began circulating online showing men restrained with tape in public areas. Some had their mouths taped, showed signs of beating, and warning signs were placed nearby.Local press reports said the mysterious figure, frustrated with inadequate law enforcement, began targeting motorcycle thieves. Residents quickly gave him the nickname “Lagos de Moreno’s Batman.” Jalisco prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos confirmed there had been incidents where young men were tied up with signs warning what would happen if people continued stealing motorcycles. Investigators were looking into the allegations against them, but stressed that “at this moment they are victims.”State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández said five cases had been documented, two vehicles possibly connected to the incidents had been identified, and no suspects had been detained. The case has exploded on social media, where English-language posts about the “Batman of Lagos” have gained thousands of likes and millions of impressions.Users have compared the anonymous figure to a comic-book vigilante, while others have warned that the situation is a sign of frustration with crime and law enforcement. The identity of the mysterious figure, or whether they are acting alone, is not yet known. Authorities are reportedly investigating whether the attacks were carried out by multiple people, leaving open the question of whether this is street-level vigilantism, an organised group, or something more coordinated. No official statement has been made by authorities on the matter. The people found tied up have reportedly received medical attention, while authorities continue investigating both the alleged motorcycle thefts and the assaults.
