Veteran filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj passes away at 73 due to cardiac arrest; fans and stars express shock

Veteran actor-writer-director K. Bhagyaraj passed away at the age of 73 on June 27, leaving the Tamil film industry in mourning. K. Bhagyaraj is one of Tamil cinema’s best screenplay writers and had a great career. His distinctive storytelling appealed to people of all ages. He began his career as an assistant director and writer for Bharathiraja before becoming an established filmmaker in his own right. His characters were likable, his humour was sharp, and his screenplays were entertaining, earning him the moniker “Screenplay King.” He stayed active in acting and public appearances in recent years, and the industry celebrated his 50-year journey in cinema.

Cardiac arrest leads to the tragic demise of K Bhagyaraj

As reported by News 18, K. Bhagyaraj was at his residence when he had a sudden cardiac arrest. He lost consciousness and was taken to Apollo Hospital in Greams Road, Chennai, for emergency treatment. Hospital staff reportedly tried resuscitation in vain, and he breathed his last. The news about his death spread quickly through social media, with tributes coming from fans and film industry members shocked by the passing of such a great filmmaker.

A filmmaker who changed Tamil screenwriting

Bhagyaraj was born in 1953 in Vellangovil, a village in Gobichettipalayam, Erode district, and changed how Tamil cinema portrayed its storylines. Unlike spectacular action scenes and heroic personalities, Bhagyaraj chose to portray common people and situations, making them entertaining with his beautifully written scripts and twists. Bhagyaraj has handed over a handbook for budding directors with his structurally sound screenplays and dialogue in his movies.

Tamil cinema loses an irreplaceable talent

K. Bhagyaraj’s death marks the end of an unparalleled era in Tamil cinema. The legacy of K. Bhagyaraj as an actor, director, scriptwriter, and mentor will remain long in memory. Though the audience will always be fond of his movies and unique narrative manner, his screenplays will be a source of inspiration for future generations of directors.
