Nepal is witnessing one of its most intense youth-led uprisings in recent years. Protests erupted across the country after the government imposed a controversial ban on social media platforms, seen by many as an attack on freedom of expression. Following violent clashes between protestors and security forces, the government late Monday night lifted the ban in an attempt to calm growing unrest. However, the damage was already done. At least 21 protestors were killed and over 42 injured, many critically, during police and army firing. Violence erupted in Kathmandu where protestors stormed the Parliament complex, vandalizing property. The movement quickly spread to major cities like Pokhara, Butwal, Bhairahawa, Bharatpur, Itahari, and Damak. Curfews have been imposed in multiple cities, with the army taking control of the streets. Despite the government’s appeal for peace after lifting the ban, tensions remain high. The protest is being led largely by Gen Z youth (ages 18–28), who have vowed not to back down until there is political change. The question remains—will lifting the ban be enough, or is this just the beginning of a larger movement demanding accountability and reform?
