With eyes on 2027 polls, BJP chief Nitin Nabin begins Punjab tour

NEW DELHI: BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Saturday began his maiden three-day visit to Punjab with prayers at the Golden Temple and a message of building a “Punjab of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s dreams”, as the party intensified its preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.Launching his tour from Amritsar, Nabin offered ‘ardas’ at the Golden Temple, performed ‘seva’ by washing utensils and later visited Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Temple and Sri Ram Tirath Temple. The visit is being viewed as a major organisational exercise aimed at energising party workers, strengthening grassroots structures and expanding the BJP’s footprint in Punjab ahead of upcoming electoral contests.Nabin also led a massive roadshow in Jalandhar on Saturday evening, accompanied by BJP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh.

Focus on organisation and 2027 elections

Nabin later chaired a nearly two-hour meeting of the Punjab BJP core committee in Amritsar to discuss organisational strategy, election preparedness and strengthening the party down to the booth level. In a post on X, Nabin said detailed discussions were held on strengthening the organisation, upcoming programmes and the prevailing political situation in Punjab.According to party leaders quoted by news agency PTI, the leadership reaffirmed its commitment to building a stronger grassroots network and working towards forming a “double-engine government” in Punjab under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The BJP has announced plans to contest all 117 Assembly seats in the 2027 Punjab elections.

“Build Punjab of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s dreams”

Speaking after offering prayers at the Golden Temple, Nabin said he prayed for Punjab’s peace, prosperity and development. “The rich history of Punjab gives it a distinct place not just in the country but across the world. The way Maharaja Ranjit Singh gave this city and state a unique identity, we all want to build Punjab of his dreams and for that I prayed,” he said.“I prayed that the way the country is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, Punjab too advances on the path of development and the rays of development reach every home, neighbourhood and village in the state,” he added.Nabin, who hails from Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, said he felt blessed to have visited the holy shrine and had gained renewed energy to work for the development of Punjab and the country.

Roadshow, youth outreach and meetings planned

Nabin’s three-day visit will include a series of organisational and outreach programmes across Punjab. On June 21, he is scheduled to participate in International Yoga Day celebrations at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara before travelling to Ludhiana. There, he will inaugurate the district BJP office, meet senior party leaders and discuss organisational expansion and future political strategy. On the final day of the visit, June 22, Nabin will hold meetings with BJP MPs, former MPs, MLAs and former legislators. He will also participate in a youth conclave and interact with young party workers on their role in strengthening the organisation and contributing to the vision of a developed India.Ahead of the visit, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab. In a post on X, Chugh alleged that the state was facing economic and social challenges under the Bhagwant Mann-led government and claimed the BJP would usher in a new era of “hope and development”.Nabin’s visit comes weeks after the BJP appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon as its Punjab unit chief, marking the first time the party has chosen a Jat Sikh leader to head its state unit, a move seen as part of its efforts to broaden its support base in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
