Imtiaz Ali questions people being comfortable with ‘burqa’ or ‘parda’: It’s not okay

Imtiaz Ali says it's not okay when someone says, 'I'm comfortable in my burqa or parda': 'It's a degenerated society'

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is known for the strong female characters in his movies which break stereotypes and live life on their own terms. Recently, in an interview, when the filmmaker was told about it, he said he feels extremely proud of it. Imtiaz is back now with another film, ‘Main Vaapas Aunga’ which is getting rave reviews from everyone. Amidst that, his recent comments have sparked a debated on social media. The ‘Jab We Met’ director shared his thoughts on burqa and parda and said that he is not okay with women saying they are comfortable with it.A viral video of him from this interview with Unfiltered by Samdish sees him saying, “I don’t like when someone says ‘I am comfortable in my Burqa. I am comfortable in my parda’. It’s a degenerated society, if you feel like this, it’s not okay.” He added further, “It means that you have become so victimized in your mind, I don’t know how.” Reacting to it, Samdish said, “Sometimes, I don’t even understand this Imtiaz, because we talk to different groups of society. The society will continue to be like this, one group talks to another group and ultimately it’s just communities interacting with each other at one point. So, if in that, let’s say there is a community, let’s say we all come from different tribes. One tribe says, I have figured out that my women will live in purdah, I will live like this and we all are in agreement. So, who am I to stop them? Main unko tokunga kya? I am not someone who will stop others”Imtiaz responded to him saying, “Nai tokne wali baat nai hai. But the people around me, my thinking is not that I am stopping someone or I am going to someone’s house and talking. But there should be tolerance, moderation. See, my latest thought is that where have the moderates gone? Nowadays, everyone is extreme. Dialogue has become difficult. I am not your enemy. I will still enjoy your nihari.”‘Main Vaapas Aunga’ starring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, released in cinemas on June 12.
