Karisma Kapoor has revealed that several actresses were hesitant to take up her role in the iconic 1997 film Dil To Pagal Hai because they were intimidated by the prospect of sharing screen space and a dance face-off with Madhuri Dixit. The revelation comes as Karisma and Madhuri are busy promoting their upcoming projects — Karisma’s web series Brown and Madhuri’s film Maa Behen. The two actors recently reunited on the reality show India’s Best Dancer, delighting fans by recreating memorable moments from their blockbuster film.

‘Nobody wanted to dance with Madhuri’

In an interview with India Today, Karisma recalled that many actresses turned down the role of Nisha because they were reluctant to compete with Madhuri, who was already regarded as one of Bollywood’s finest dancers.”When Dil To Pagal Hai was being made, no actress wanted to do the role opposite Madhuri. Nobody wanted to dance with her and compete with her in a dance face-off,” Karisma said. The film, directed by Yash Chopra, featured one of Bollywood’s most memorable dance rivalries between Madhuri and Karisma, with both actors earning praise for their performances.

Karisma on why Nisha was a game-changing character

Reflecting on her role, Karisma said Nisha broke the conventional mould of a Hindi film heroine. “I think cinema changed with Nisha’s character. She was a heroine, but not the conventional one. She was the one with whom the hero did not fall in love. He was rejecting her, and the audience could actually see her pain,” she said. The actor added that the emotional arc of the character was both unique and challenging.”Even today, I get goosebumps thinking about it because, normally, the hero is supposed to love the heroine. Here was a girl wondering, ‘Why is this happening to me? I love this guy so much.’ That emotional journey was something very special,” Karisma shared.

Madhuri and Karisma recreate Dil To Pagal Hai magic

Recently, fans were treated to a nostalgic reunion when Madhuri appeared on India’s Best Dancer 5 to promote Maa Behen. Karisma, who serves as one of the judges on the show, welcomed her former co-star with a warm hug.The duo also recreated moments from the popular song Dil Le Gayi, drawing loud cheers from the audience. Videos from their reunion quickly went viral on social media, with fans celebrating the return of one of Bollywood’s most loved on-screen pairings. Released in 1997, Dil To Pagal Hai starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor in lead roles and remains one of the most celebrated musical romances in Hindi cinema. Karisma’s performance as Nisha earned her widespread acclaim and a National Award, cementing her place among the industry’s leading stars. Go to Source
