Watch: This sweeper operates at 80km/h on China roads; video goes viral

Brooms hardly get any popularity, unless its Harry Potter’s Firebolt, but this high-speed road-cleaning machine from China has done just that. Recently, a video showing an advanced road-cleaning machine operating in China has gone viral on social media, with many viewers expressing fascination over its speed, efficiency and futuristic appearance. The widely shared clip shows the automated street sweeper moving along a highway while simultaneously collecting dust, debris and litter, all while causing minimal disruption to surrounding traffic. The video was posted by a spokesperson for China’s ministry of foreign affairs, who also serves as deputy director general of the department of press, communication and public diplomacy. Sharing the footage, the spokesperson wrote: “High-speed road sweeper in China. Operating at up to 80 km/h, it clears metal, rubble, and bulky debris in seconds without disrupting traffic. Safety restored. Innovation in motion .”The rise of such technology comes as China continues to deploy robots across a growing range of everyday operations. Until now, most of China’s efforts to develop practical humanoid robots have remained behind factory doors, where machines sort parcels, carry components and perform carefully programmed tasks in controlled environments. However, a different application of robotics is beginning to take shape. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, a newly unveiled household robot in central China is being presented more as a domestic assistant than an industrial machine.Videos released this week showed the robot carrying out a variety of household chores, including chopping vegetables, making beds and loading washing machines. The reported objective is to improve robotic understanding of routine domestic activities such as tidying, storage and retrieval. Even tasks that may appear simple continue to pose challenges for many humanoid systems. Activities such as folding bedding, handling delicate objects and moving through confined living spaces often require balance, pressure control and visual judgement that humans perform instinctively.
