Saif Ali Khan gets candid about the fate of ‘Agent Vinod’

Saif Ali Khan gets candid about the fate of 'Agent Vinod': 'It didn't sustain because it probably wasn’t tightly made film'

More than a decade after the release of ‘Agent Vinod’, Saif Ali Khan has candidly reflected on why the spy thriller failed to achieve the success many had anticipated. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the film arrived with considerable expectations, boasting international-scale action, stylish storytelling and a charismatic lead performance from Saif himself. However, despite generating curiosity upon release, the film struggled to maintain momentum at the box office. Looking back, the actor believes the project may have suffered from being too ambitious for its own good.

Saif Ali Khan calls the film a vanity-driven venture

During a recent interaction with Variety India, Saif acknowledged that his emotional investment in the project may have influenced some of the decisions surrounding the film. “I think of ‘Agent Vinod’ as a film that might have been vain. But also, that film opened really well, you know. It’s just that it did not sustain because it probably wasn’t a tightly made film, or it went off track in many ways. Or, as Sriram himself said, he put too many toppings on the pizza.”While the actor admitted the execution may have faltered, he remains convinced that the concept itself had tremendous potential.

Why Saif Ali Khan still believes in the film’s idea

Despite its commercial outcome, Saif feels the film attempted something fresh at a time when Indian cinema was only beginning to explore large-scale espionage narratives. “But the idea wasn’t bad, and the title wasn’t bad, and it was the right film to make. Imagine a kind of spy movie ahead of its time, perhaps. It was a cool film, but it should have held more. Maybe we made some mistakes.”The actor further clarified that while personal passion drove the project, vanity alone wasn’t responsible for its failure. “But my point is: it was vanity. I was excited to do that. I made the film for myself, but it did open well. So its failure was not because it was a vain idea.”

Lalit Parimoo’s criticism reignites debate

Saif’s remarks come shortly after actor Lalit Parimoo, who featured in the film, offered a different perspective on what went wrong behind the scenes. According to him, excessive involvement from the lead stars affected the creative process.“I think the main reason was that there was too much interference from the stars, Saif and Kareena. The way Sriram wanted to make that film, he couldn’t make it that way. He was constantly being told what he should do, so it became a mess. The writing and the direction team… They didn’t get to present what they wanted. That was the flaw of the film.”His comments sparked renewed discussion among movie buffs about whether creative differences may have impacted the final product.

Sriram Raghavan also admitted missteps

Interestingly, director Sriram Raghavan had previously spoken about the shortcomings of ‘Agent Vinod’ and accepted responsibility for certain creative decisions. “One mistake I made is to take it for granted that the story is not vital, the sequences are vital. It wasn’t as good as it should have been,” he had said. His admission echoed a criticism often directed at the film, that while individual sequences were entertaining, the narrative lacked the cohesion needed to keep audiences invested.

Saif Ali Khan’s successful return to streaming

While ‘Agent Vinod’ remains one of the more debated chapters of his career, Saif Ali Khan is currently enjoying a successful phase on the digital front. The actor has been receiving praise for his performance in the crime drama ‘Kartavya’, which premiered on Netflix on May 15, 2026.Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, the series features Saif as a morally conflicted police officer and has emerged as one of the platform’s most talked-about Indian releases of the year.
