Bengal Education Scam: Abhishek Banerjee Appears Before ED in Teacher Recruitment Probe

A major political development unfolded in Kolkata as Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in connection with the alleged teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal. According to officials, Banerjee reached the ED office shortly before the scheduled questioning session. The central agency had earlier issued a summons seeking his appearance as part of its ongoing money laundering investigation linked to alleged irregularities in recruitment processes within the state’s education sector. The investigation stems from allegations that recruitment rules were violated, resulting in deserving candidates being denied jobs while allegedly ineligible candidates secured appointments through illegal means. The ED has been probing the financial trail associated with the alleged scam and claims to have already identified and attached assets believed to be linked to proceeds of crime. The case has remained one of the most high-profile corruption investigations in West Bengal. Previous stages of the probe saw significant recoveries of cash, gold, and documents during raids conducted on individuals linked to the recruitment process. Investigators are examining whether influential political and administrative figures benefited from the alleged irregularities. Apart from the ED inquiry, Banerjee is also facing scrutiny in a separate investigation related to allegations involving forged signatures, which is being examined by state agencies. The teacher recruitment controversy has triggered intense political confrontation between the ruling TMC and opposition parties, with critics demanding accountability and transparency in public sector hiring. Meanwhile, TMC leaders have repeatedly alleged political targeting by central agencies. With fresh questioning underway, political observers are closely watching the developments, as the probe could have significant implications for West Bengal’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
