The violent protest in the capital has left at least one dead. The protest comes a week after Nepal banned social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, among others, for failing to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within the given deadline.

The videos are widely being circulated on TikTok, one of the social media platforms that has not been restricted.

As the protestors surrounded the Parliament building, the police fired tear gas and water cannon but were outnumbered and sought safety inside the Parliament complex.

A curfew was also announced on Monday amid the tense situation around the Parliament.

“Stop the ban on social media; stop corruption, not social media,” the crowds chanted, waving the red and blue national flags.

The social media platforms which have not been banned include TikTok, Viber and three other platforms.
