Chinese President Xi Jinping will take part in the virtual BRICS Summit convened by Brazil on Monday to discuss US President Donald Trump’s trade policy, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is skipping the event.

“President Xi Jinping will attend the BRICS Leaders’ online summit in Beijing on September 8 and deliver an important speech,” said the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also take part in the summit, informed the Kremlin last week.

Brazil’s Lula da Silva has called the gathering to discuss not only the trade tariffs imposed by Trump, but also to rally fellow heads of major emerging market nations in support of multilateralism, people familiar with the plan told Bloomberg.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had earlier confirmed that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will participate in the BRICS Summit convened to discuss harsh tariffs imposed by Trump on Brazil and India.

“The Brazilian Chair of BRICS has called for a virtual meeting. This meeting would be held on (September) 8th. From our side, it will be the External Affairs Minister who will be participating in it. This BRICS summit is at the Leaders’ level,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a press briefing.

India and Brazil face the highest tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. The Trump administration imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports for purchasing Russian oil, which it claims fuels the war in Ukraine. India has denounced the tariffs as “unfair and unreasonable.”

India has tread carefully after Trump recently softened his tone towards India following weeks of tensions over US tariffs. Monday’s virtual meeting of BRICS leaders is scheduled to last only a couple of hours, starting 8 am ET (5:30 pm IST), a Brazilian government official familiar with the plan told Bloomberg.

The BRICS bloc, comprising India, China, South Africa, Iran and others, has increasingly drawn the ire of Trump as it seeks to expand in Asia and the Middle East. Trump had also previously threatened to impose additional tariffs on BRICS nations for their efforts to reduce reliance on the dollar by expanding trade in local currencies. However, Trump’s tariffs have further encouraged BRICS nations to increase ties with China.
