Hollywood’s ugliest custody battle

The legal battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seems to have had a beginning and a middle, but no clear end. The former couple’s relationship began amid controversy and divided public opinion, and years after their separation, legal disputes continued in courts across multiple jurisdictions.

Pitt and Jolie married at Château Miraval in France but filed for divorce just two years later in 2016. Although they were declared legally single in 2019, custody-related issues remained unresolved for years.

Jolie alleged in court documents that Pitt had been physically and verbally abusive toward her and their children during a private flight, claims that she said caused lasting trauma. Pitt has consistently denied the allegations.

Jolie was initially granted primary custody, while Pitt received temporary visitation rights in 2016 and later temporary joint custody in 2021. However, that ruling was subsequently overturned. Today, all of their children are either adults or nearing adulthood, making traditional custody arrangements largely irrelevant.
