According to agricultural consultant Ravikant Pandey, who has over 25 years of experience, the wood of the Nilgiri tree, commonly known as Safeda, is in particularly high demand within the plywood industry. Farmers can plant these trees along the boundaries of their fields while continuing to grow seasonal crops in the main area. The cost of planting Nilgiri is relatively low, and it requires minimal maintenance. It also does not demand special fertilisers or frequent irrigation. (Local18)

Interestingly, this tree is ready for harvesting in just four to five years, and each tree can fetch a profit of several thousand rupees. Ravikant Pandey explains that approximately 1,200 eucalyptus trees can be planted on a single acre of land. Within five years, these trees are ready for sale. With a bit of care, a single tree can sell for up to Rs 1,500, meaning farmers could earn up to Rs 18 lakh from one acre over five years. (Local18)

The real benefit lies in the fact that once planted, Nilgiri trees continue to regenerate from their roots, eliminating the need for repeated investment. As a result, farmers who are willing to wait a few years can earn lakhs through eucalyptus cultivation with minimal ongoing costs. (Local18)

In the West Champaran district of Bihar, hundreds of farmers are already growing Safeda. One such farmer, Parshuram, says that the tree has medicinal value as well; its leaves and bark are used in the production of various medicines. With proper management, the potential for earnings from this tree can increase significantly. (Local18)
