Breaking: Mumbai Goat Sacrifice Row Spreads to Goregaon, BMC Removes Animals Amid Rising Society Tensions

Tensions over goat sacrifice arrangements during Eid have escalated across multiple residential societies in Mumbai, with disputes now spreading from Thane’s Mira Road to Ghatkopar and Goregaon. What began as a local disagreement in Mira Road’s Poonam Society has now developed into a wider controversy involving residents, civic authorities, and police intervention across the city. In Mira Road, the issue reportedly began when goats were brought inside a residential society and a temporary shed was set up for sacrifice preparations. The situation led to protests by residents, clashes between groups, and injuries before municipal authorities intervened and removed the animals. Following this, similar confrontations were reported in Ghatkopar’s Sagar Park Society, where residents objected to goats being kept within the residential premises. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed teams to the site and began removing the animals after issuing warnings to residents. Officials stated that goats were either voluntarily removed by owners or seized by civic teams when instructions were not followed. Police personnel were also deployed to maintain law and order as tensions rose within the societies. Some residents argued that permissions had been misused or unclear, while others insisted that civic rules strictly prohibit slaughter or animal keeping for sacrifice within residential complexes. The controversy has now reached Goregaon, where reports of similar disputes have emerged, indicating a growing pattern of conflict over religious practices within housing societies. Authorities reiterated that designated slaughterhouses and approved locations must be used for such activities, and residential spaces cannot be converted for this purpose. According to officials on the ground, a large number of goats have already been shifted to approved locations by BMC teams, while others were taken away by owners themselves. Police deployment is expected to continue in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation during the festive period. The situation remains under close monitoring as civic authorities work to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent further clashes.
