'When you fall from power in Delhi ...': Mamata accuses BJP of 'state terrorism', invokes Constitution

KOLKATA: Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the BJP of practising “state terrorism” and said she would challenge its actions through legal means, invoking the Constitution and the judiciary.”I want to remind the judiciary that they are the true protectors of the law… I will continue to fight a legal battle against state terrorism. I will see which holds more power – the Constitution or the nozzle of a gun,” the Trinamool Congress chief said while addressing party workers and supporters. Her remarks come amid a political storm over the demolition of alleged illegal structures near Howrah Railway Station earlier this month, an operation carried out under heavy police presence with bulldozers and other machinery.TMC supremo also took aim at the Centre, warning of political repercussions. “When you fall from power in Delhi, you will face the consequences of your actions – we are waiting for that day,” she said.Drawing a contrast between her government’s approach to rehabilitation and the current administration’s handling of evictions, Mamata cited the construction of the Kalyani Express Setu.”When Kalyani Express Setu was built, 43 homes were affected on the road, and we built 43 homes exactly the same for their rehabilitation. Now, there is looting, vandalism, and attempts to erase all traces,” she said. The demolition drive, carried out on May 16, targeted structures identified by civic authorities as unauthorised encroachments in the Howrah station area. The action has triggered protests from the Trinamool Congress, which has accused the newly formed BJP government in the state of promoting a “bulldozer culture” and carrying out forceful evictions of hawkers and residents.TMC leaders had earlier staged a demonstration outside the West Bengal Legislative assembly over the issue, while the party announced wider protests across Kolkata and adjoining areas against the eviction drive.
