The victim, Yogendra Singh, who had been volunteering at the temple for nearly 15 years, was attacked near the Dharamshala on the temple premises.
According to police, a group of devotees allegedly dragged him out and assaulted him with sticks, rods, and fists. Singh succumbed to his injuries soon after.
Investigators learned during the probe that the attackers had demanded prasad from Singh, which led to an argument. “In response, these accused persons physically assaulted the victim with sticks and fist blows,” the police said in a statement.
Five men were arrested on Saturday, and four more were taken into custody on Monday.
Among them are two accused of sheltering others and conspiring to cover up the crime.
Police said several suspects remain on the run, and search teams are working to track them down. Most of the accused are either related or close friends, officials added.
Another sewadar, Raju, described the incident to ANI: “What I know is, around 9 pm, they took him from the Dharamshala. There were 10-15 people. They had iron rods and sticks, and they beat him to death. The deceased’s name is Yogesh… They were asking for prasad, and Yogesh asked them to wait for a few minutes, after which they started threatening him… Whenever these people came to the temple, they came with an aggressive attitude and expected us to give them whatever they wanted.”
Disturbing CCTV footage from the temple shows the group mercilessly beating Singh as he lay on the ground, while bystanders looked on helplessly.
