Postal traffic to the United States has dropped by more than 80% after President Donald Trump’s administration introduced new tariffs, according to the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

In late July, the US government announced the end of a tax exemption on small packages entering the country. The change came into effect on 29 August, sparking widespread disruption to international mail services.

The UPU, a United Nations agency that oversees international postal cooperation, said 88 postal operators around the world have either fully or partially suspended services to the United States. These include major national services like Germany’s Deutsche Post, Britain’s Royal Mail, and postal operators in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Postal services in countries such as India, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK announced they would stop accepting most US-bound parcels due to the policy change.

The UPU stated that postal traffic to the US on August 29 had fallen 81% compared to a week earlier, based on data shared through its global electronic network. “Furthermore, 88 postal operators informed the UPU they have suspended some or all postal services to the US until a solution is implemented,” it added.

In a statement, UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki said the agency is now working on a “rapid technical solution” to help resume normal mail flows to the US. He did not give a timeline for when services might be restored.

Based in Bern, Switzerland, the Universal Postal Union was founded in 1874 and has 192 member countries. It sets international rules for postal services and helps improve cooperation and efficiency among national postal systems.
