California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday took a dig at US President Donald Trump over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin, China.

In an X post, Newsom shared a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharing a laugh with Putin and Xi, while he could also be seen walking hand-in-hand with the Russian President.

The latter part of the video showed Prime Minister Modi posing for a group picture with the world leaders at the Tianjin summit.

Amid Trump’s plan to crack down on crime and illegal immigration in Chicago, the California Governor, in his post, wrote, “But have no fear, Trump is sending the Guard to Chicago.”

Last week, Donald Trump had threatened to flood Chicago with National Guard troops and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, as Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said the President lacked the legal authority.

As Trump has amped up the threat of a federal deployment in the nation’s third-largest city in recent days, public officials and community organisers said they were doing what they could to get ready.

Trump justified his decision by painting a bleak picture of crime in Chicago, calling it a “disaster.”

The US President also singled out Chicago because of its so-called sanctuary city status for immigrants.

THE TIANJIN SCO SUMMIT

The 10-member SCO Summit saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders being welcomed by Xi. The 25th summit was formally kicked off on Sunday night (local time) and was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Modi and Putin.

This year’s summit was stated to be the largest of the SCO group as China, which holds the Presidency of the organisation this year, has invited 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to attend the SCO Plus summit.

Founded in Shanghai in June 2001, the SCO has expanded from six founding members into a 26-nation family of 10 members, two observers and 14 dialogue partners spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.

With major emerging markets and developing countries such as China, Russia and India among its members, the SCO represents nearly half of the world’s population and a quarter of the global economy.
