Seth Rogen talks about the usage of AI in filmmaking

Seth Rogen criticizes use of AI by screenwriters: ‘You shouldn't be a writer’

The usage of artificial intelligence in life has become more and more prominent. A lot of careers now demand the use of AI tools to complete tasks effectively. However, there is a lot of ongoing debate about the use of AI for creative works, including filmmaking, screenwriting, and designing, etc. Seth Rogen, who recently had his latest animated film ‘Tangles’ premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, weighed in on the debate.

Seth Rogen on using AI as a screenwriter

While attending the Cannes Film Festival, Rogen stopped for a chat with Brut America and opened up about how and why AI usage in screenwriting and filmmaking is wrong. He joked about the matter and stated that he will never understand what AI is supposed to do with a screenwriter. He added, “Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is like the most stupid dog s— I’ve ever seen in my life.” He further elaborated that if you use AI for your work, it is “not writing”. He further quipped that “If your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process, you shouldn’t be a writer. ‘Cause then you’re not writing.”To conclude his statement, he also stated that he thinks that such writers should go do “something else” altogether.

Seth Rogen comments that he loves to write

The actor also stated that using AI to write something will never make sense to him, as it will never be true writing. He shared that “I think the idea of a tool that makes me write less is not appealing to me. I like writing.” Sarah Leavitt, whose 2010 memoir was the inspiration for ‘Tangles,’ also weighed in on the matter and stated that she also encourages her students to do things on their own, no matter what.Leavitt works as a creative writing professor professionally. She added on that “We like to say to our students, ‘One of the things AI can’t do is go through the creative process.’ You’re not just creating a product that’s done, you’re going through the process of figuring it out.”Seth Rogen is not the only celebrity who has spoken out against the usage of AI in filmmaking and art in general. Scarlett Johansson, Charisma Carpenter, Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, George R. R. Martin, and many others have time and time again spoken up against the usage of AI. Many people also opposed when the AI actress Tilly Norwood went viral a few months ago.
