Twisha death case: Mother-in-law claims marijuana use during pregnancy, says parents pushed her into glamour world

Twisha death case: Mother-in-law claims marijuana use during pregnancy, says parents pushed her into glamour world

A 31-year-old woman from Noida was found hanging at her husband’s house in Bhopal, news agency PTI reported. Twisha Sharma, the daughter-in-law of a retired judge was found hanging at city’s Katara Hills area on Tuesday night.

NEW DELHI: The mother-in-law of Noida woman Twisha Sharma, who was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal, has on Monday levelled big charges against her parents and her mental health.Twisha (33) was found dead at her husband’s home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12, just five months after marrying Samarth Singh, a lawyer, in December 2025. Her family has alleged that she was subjected to mental torture and dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws and have claimed she was murdered. The case took a dramatic turn on Monday after Twisha’s mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, painted a sharply different picture of the events leading to the woman’s death. In a press conference, Giribala Singh claimed that Twisha had been undergoing psychiatric counselling and was prescribed medicines “given to a schizophrenic patient”. She also alleged that Twisha showed “withdrawal symptoms”, including trembling hands. In a big charge, she said: “Twisha confessed to consuming large quantities of marijuana during pregnancy”. “She went for psychiatric counselling also, and medicines were prescribed to her, which are given to a schizophrenic patient… She would remain stable for a day or so, but then again, there would be a slight change in her condition,” she claimed. The retired judge also rejected allegations of dowry harassment, saying the family had tried to save Twisha after she was found hanging. “We gave Twisha CPR and even neighbours tried to save her. We tried our best to save Twisha,” she said. She further accused Twisha’s parents of neglecting their daughter and exploiting her financially. “Twisha’s parents pushed her into the glamour world at an early age and later disowned her. They were earning because of her looks and are now not allowing her cremation. I have faith in the investigating agencies and in the truth,” she said. These same claims were also made in the bail plea filed for husband Samarth Singh. According to the application, she would become irritable when she did not have access to narcotic substances and had been receiving psychiatric care. The plea also claimed that she had suffered a miscarriage and that her behaviour towards her in-laws changed after becoming pregnant.A local court in Bhopal, which had earlier granted anticipatory bail to Giribala Singh, reserved its order on Monday on Samarth Singh’s bail plea. Samarth remains absconding.Police said six teams have been deployed to trace him and a reward of Rs 10,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest.Speaking to ANI, assistant commissioner of police Rajneesh Kashyap Kaul said authorities have also contacted the passport office to prevent the accused from fleeing the country.”A reward of Rs 10,000 has been announced in the case. Several teams have been deployed to catch the accused Samarth Singh,” the officer said. The police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. According to ACP Kashyap, the preliminary post-mortem report from AIIMS Bhopal indicated death due to “hanging suicide”.He said no findings related to alleged drug use had emerged in the post-mortem report so far. “In the bail petition, allegations regarding Twisha being a drug addict have been mentioned, but we are strictly investigating the case according to the sections in the FIR,” he told PTI.Meanwhile, Twisha’s family has refused to accept the body and is demanding a second post-mortem, preferably at AIIMS Delhi, claiming that the local investigation has been compromised. Her father, Navnidhi Sharma, questioned why the body should be handed over when the case remains “dubious”.”The PM report and evidence do not match. This is the reason we have applied for second postmortem. We want the government to take cognizance. This is a high-profile family. We have lost any hope for justice,” he said.According to her relatives, Twisha had wanted to leave Bhopal and return to Noida and had remained in touch with them until around 10 pm on the day of her death.
