BREAKING VERDICT: Azam Khan Convicted in Tanakhiya Remarks Case by Rampur Court

In a major political development from Uttar Pradesh, senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has been convicted in the “Tanakhiya statement” case by a special MP-MLA court in Rampur. The case pertains to remarks allegedly made during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign in the Bhojipura area, where Azam Khan is accused of making controversial and objectionable comments targeting the then district magistrate. According to court proceedings, the remarks were found to be in violation of legal provisions, leading the court to hold Azam Khan guilty. The verdict marks another significant setback for the veteran SP leader, who is currently lodged in Rampur jail in connection with multiple ongoing cases. The court is expected to announce the quantum of punishment shortly, with legal experts noting that the maximum sentence in this case could extend up to three years. The conviction adds to Azam Khan’s growing list of legal troubles, as he and his son Abdullah Azam have faced several convictions and pending cases in recent years. The latest ruling is expected to have a major political impact in Uttar Pradesh, especially within the Samajwadi Party, where Azam Khan remains a prominent and influential figure despite his prolonged absence from active politics due to legal proceedings. Supporters of Azam Khan have maintained that the cases against him are politically motivated, while opponents argue that the judiciary is acting strictly on the basis of evidence and due process. The Rampur MP-MLA special court’s decision has once again brought Azam Khan into the national spotlight, reigniting debates around political speech, election conduct, and accountability of public representatives. As the court prepares to announce the sentence, attention now turns to the next legal steps, including possible appeals in higher courts. The verdict is likely to trigger strong political reactions across party lines in Uttar Pradesh’s already heated political landscape.
