The British Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, experienced a major reshuffle on Friday, resulting in key departures and new appointments. Most notably, Angela Rayner resigned from her dual roles as Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. She has now been replaced by David Lammy, who takes on the role of Deputy Prime Minister in addition to his new post as Justice Secretary.

This cabinet shake-up comes after a week of discussions and just days after Parliament returned from its summer recess. Starmer had promised a “phase two” of his Labour government, but that plan was disrupted following revelations about Rayner’s tax default, which damaged her standing.

Meanwhile, Peter Kyle, who was former Science Secretary, has now been moved to Business Secretary. Liz Kendall, former Work and Pensions Secretary, will now become the Science Secretary. Her previous position will be in charge of Pat McFadden, who earlier served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

This extensive reshuffle reflects Starmer’s effort to reset his government’s direction and respond to recent political challenges, aiming to deliver a stronger Labour administration moving forward.
