Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the United States by area, but comparing it with some of North America’s largest lakes makes it seem even tinier. The state covers just 1,214 square miles, which is surprisingly small once you realise that six freshwater lakes in or partly connected to the US are actually larger. Some of these lakes are so vast that they behave more like inland seas, with rough waves, changing weather, and shorelines that stretch far beyond the horizon. Five belong to the Great Lakes system, while the sixth sits along the US-Canada border and contains thousands of islands. Together, these lakes completely change how people think about freshwater geography in North America. Lake of the Woods
Lake of the Woods covers around 1,679 square miles, making it comfortably larger than Rhode Island. The lake stretches across northern Minnesota and into Canada, reportedly containing more than 14,500 islands. Experts say that is more islands than any other lake in the world. The lake has become famous for fishing, especially walleye fishing, and attracts visitors throughout the year. Wildlife around the shoreline includes pelicans, herons, mallards, and black bears. On calm days, parts of the lake can appear almost ocean-like because of its huge open water areas.
Lake Ontario
At roughly 7,340 square miles, Lake Ontario is the smallest Great Lake by surface area, though it still dwarfs Rhode Island many times over. The lake forms part of the border between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.Lake Ontario plays a major role in shipping because it connects the Great Lakes system to the Atlantic Ocean through the St Lawrence Seaway. Around 9 million people reportedly rely on the lake for drinking water. The Niagara River also feeds into it, linking the lake closely with Niagara Falls.

Lake Erie spans around 9,910 square miles and borders several US states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York. It is the shallowest Great Lake, which helps it warm faster than the others.Experts suggest this warmer water makes Erie the most biologically productive of the Great Lakes. Millions of migratory birds travel through the region every year, while rare species continue to survive on islands within the lake. Freshwater jellyfish and freshwater sponges have also reportedly been found in its waters, which surprises many visitors.
Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan covers around 22,300 square miles, making it nearly 15 times the area of Rhode Island. It is also the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States.Major cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee sit along its shoreline. The lake is known for its huge freshwater dunes and long beaches, especially around Indiana Dunes National Park. The eastern shoreline has also developed a reputation for fruit farming because the lake helps moderate temperatures year-round.
Lake Huron
Lake Huron is slightly larger than Lake Michigan, covering about 23,007 square miles. The lake contains the famous Georgian Bay region and thousands of islands scattered across its waters.Experts estimate that nearly 1,000 shipwrecks rest beneath Lake Huron’s surface, preserved by cold freshwater conditions. The lake is also home to Wasaga Beach, reportedly the world’s longest freshwater beach.Large forested areas around the lake continue to support diverse wildlife and relatively undeveloped shorelines.
Lake Superior

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, spanning an enormous 31,700 square miles. It borders Ontario, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.The lake is deeper and colder than the other Great Lakes, with some parts reaching depths of more than 1,300 feet. Much of the surrounding coastline remains wild and sparsely populated, helping preserve habitats for moose, wolves, lynx, and woodland caribou.Standing beside Lake Superior reportedly feels more like facing an ocean than a lake.
