BREAKING DEFENCE: NS Raja Subramani Appointed as New Chief of Defence Staff of India

In a major development for India’s defence leadership, retired Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the country. He will replace incumbent CDS General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure is set to conclude on 30 May. According to official updates, the transition marks a significant change in the higher command structure of India’s armed forces. NS Raja Subramani, who retired from active military service in 2024, is currently serving as a key strategic military advisor associated with national security coordination roles. His appointment as CDS is expected to bring extensive operational experience and strategic planning expertise to the post. Before his retirement, Subramani held the position of Vice Chief of the Indian Army, where he played a crucial role in operational planning, modernization initiatives, and inter-service coordination. Defence sources highlight that his leadership experience and understanding of joint operations across the Army, Navy, and Air Force make him a strong choice for the top defence position. The outgoing CDS Anil Chauhan, who assumed office after the creation of the post to improve integration among India’s three armed forces, is completing his tenure on 30 May. His leadership period focused on strengthening jointness, restructuring defence commands, and improving coordination among services. The appointment of a new CDS is considered critical as India continues to modernize its defence infrastructure and respond to evolving regional and global security challenges. The CDS plays a key role as the principal military advisor to the government and oversees integration and joint operations of the armed forces. With NS Raja Subramani set to take charge, expectations are high that the Indian defence establishment will enter a new phase of strategic coordination and modernization.
