Tamil Nadu CM swearing-in: Short of majority by just 10 seats TVK chief Vijay to take oath on May 7 - but how will it form government?

NEW DELHI: TVK chief Vijay is set to take oath on May 7 as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu after securing victory in the state assembly elections with 108 seats, ANI reported citing sources on Tuesday. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.Vijay’s party emerged as the single-largest party in Tamil Nadu polls but fell short of crossing the majority mark by just 10 seats. TVK is yet to decide which party it would form an allaince with.

How will Vijay form government?

Form allaince for a majority government

To secure a majority and form the government, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is likely to seek backing from smaller parties such as the Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPM, and VCK, which together could help the party cross the majority mark.On forming alliance with TVK, AICC In-charge Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, said that the party’s leadership would take a call.”The people of Tamil Nadu, they voted for a change. Especially the youngsters and women have moved towards TVK and that’s why TVK is getting such large numbers. I have already submitted a report to our Congress President, Kharge ji, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul ji, and General Secretary of the Organisation Venugopal ji. All of them will take a call on what to do in Tamil Nadu,” ANI quoted him saying.Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi congratulated Vijay after his massive victory on Monday. “I spoke to Thiru Vijay and congratulated him on TVK’s spectacular result. This mandate reflects the rising voice of youth which cannot, and will not, be ignored. My heartfelt thanks to the Congress workers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for their hard work and support. I reiterate that the Congress party will continue to protect and serve the people of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he said in a post on X.Reacting to this, Vijay said, “My sincere thanks to the Honorable Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the call and kind wishes! We shall remain committed to excellence in public service, and preserving the cultural ethos of our state which requires collective cooperation. Beyond politics, we shall prioritize for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the TVK chief for the party’s “impressive performance”.”Gratitude to the voters of Tamil Nadu who supported the NDA in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. We will always remain at the forefront in addressing people’s issues and improving their lives. Congratulations to TVK on their impressive performance. The Centre will leave no stone unturned in furthering the progress of Tamil Nadu and the well-being of their people,” he said in a post on X.Vijay thanked him and said that the party was looking “forward to the Union Government’s support in this endeavor.””Thank you, Hon’ble @PMOIndia, for your greetings. The well-being of our people remains our only goal. Transcending politics, we shall focus on the State’s progress and the welfare of people of Tamil Nadu. We look forward to the Union Government’s support in this endeavor,” he said in a post on X.

Form a minority government

If Vijay’s party choses not to form alliance, it has the option to form a minority government as the single-largest party.”Vijay does not need to form a majority government. He can be invited by the Governor to form the government and take a floor test and dare the DMK and AIADMK to vote him out,” PTI quoted political commentator Sumanth Raman saying. However, if TVK forms a minority government, it would have to rely on the support of opposition parties to get a legislation smoothly passed in the assembly.

Defections

With both the DMK and AIADMK alliances emerging weakened after the election results, TVK could also explore the possibility of gaining support through defections from rival camps. Riding on the political momentum generated by Vijay’s rise, the party may attract individual MLAs or dissatisfied factions from established alliances who see a TVK-led government as the state’s new political centre of power.
