The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more downpour for several parts of the country, which could worsen existing flood conditions or trigger new disasters across several states. According to the forecast by the weather department, the monthly average rainfall for September 2025 is likely to exceed 109 per cent of the long-term average of 167.9 mm.

The IMD predicted normal to above-normal rainfall in September for most parts of the country. However, some regions in the northeast, east, extreme southern peninsula, and parts of northwest India are likely to witness below-average rainfall.

Speaking about the same, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra warned of flooding in southern Haryana, Delhi, and northern Rajasthan in September due to heavy rain. He also warned of landslides and flash floods for Uttarakhand.

“Many rivers originate in Uttarakhand. So, heavy rainfall means many rivers will be flooded, and it will impact cities and towns downstream. So, we should keep this in mind,” he said.

He further noted that Chhattisgarh’s upper Mahanadi river catchment areas are also likely to receive heavy rainfall, which could increase the risk of river flooding.

Rain Havoc In North India

Heavy rain wreaked havoc across North India. Uttarakhand witnessed devastating flash floods following a cloudburst in Uttarkashi that killed at least five and left several missing.

Flash floods triggered by cloudbursts—especially in Dharali village—caused multiple deaths and left many missing.

Aerial cloudbursts and landslides resulted in at least 41 fatalities around Vaishno Devi and Doda/Reasi areas, contributing to a total monsoon death toll of about 122 in the region for August alone.

The situation in Himachal also remains tense with several parts of the hill state witnessing flash floods and landslides. The state also witnessed widespread landslides, road washouts, and infrastructure damage.
