Tamil Nadu assembly elections: From MK Stalin to EPS and Vijay; key candidates to watch on May 4

Tamil Nadu assembly elections: From MK Stalin to EPS and Vijay; key candidates to watch on May 4

The political battle for Tamil Nadu will enter its decisive stage with the counting of votes on Monday, as attention turns to whether DMK retains its grip on power, whether AIADMK mounts a strong comeback, or TVK manages to alter the state’s traditional equation. However, beyond individual contests, this election is being closely tracked for how new political entrants and alliance dynamics reshape traditional voting patterns. From chief minister MK Stalin defending his turf to actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay making his electoral debut, and AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palanisami fighting to reclaim relevance, the 2026 election was packed with high-stakes battles across constituencies. Here are the key candidates MK Stalin: The chief minister is contesting from Kolathur, facing AIADMK’s Santhana Krishnan in a closely watched contest. Kolathur has remained a DMK stronghold since 2011, when Stalin first won from the seat.He retained it in both the 2016 and 2021 assembly elections. In 2021, he secured a massive victory margin of around 1,00,000 votes against AIADMK’s Aadhi Rajaram.Udhayanidhi Stalin: Son of MK Stalin and deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin is contesting from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni against AIADMK’s Aadhi Rajaram. In 2021, he won the seat with a vote share of 68.92% against PMK’s Kassali. In the run up to the assembly elections, Udhayanidhi evolved from a campaign face to a key strategist, emerging as the DMK’s youth outreach leader. His performance is being closely watched as a measure of both his leadership and the party’s future direction.Thalapathy Vijay: The actor-turned-politician has made his electoral debut and is being seen as the biggest disruptor in the race. He is contesting from Tiruchirapalli East and Perambur. His party, launched in February 2024, has fielded candidates across all 234 constituencies.Edappadi K Palanisami: The AIADMK leader is contesting from Edappadi in Salem district. He has worked to consolidate the party by bringing back former rivals, including TTV Dhinakaran. This time, he has also built a broader alliance, including BJP and PMK, aiming to capitalise on anti-incumbency against the DMK and regain lost ground.O Pannerselvam: Once a close confidant of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, he has aligned with DMK ahead of the election. The ruling party has fielded him from Bodinayakkanur, a constituency he has represented across multiple terms.Nainar Nagendran: BJP state unit chief is contesting from Sattur. In 2021, he won from Tirunelveli assembly constituency. Go to Source
