A man has been arrested in Delhi’s Rohini area for allegedly murdering his wife and mother-in-law following a domestic dispute that began during his son’s birthday celebration, police said on Sunday.

Police received a PCR call around 3:50 pm at the KNK Marg Police Station about a double murder in Sector-17, Rohini.

When officers reached the spot, they found the bodies of Kusum Sinha (63) and her daughter Priya Sehgal (34) lying inside a room, officials said.

The call was made by Megh Sinha (30), Kusum’s son, who told police that his mother had gone to Priya’s residence on August 28 for her grandson Chirag’s birthday.

A quarrel reportedly broke out between Priya and her husband, Yogesh Sehgal, over the gifts exchanged between both sides of the family.

Kusum chose to stay back to help resolve the matter, police said.

When Megh was unable to reach his mother two days later, he went to his sister’s house. He found the flat locked from the outside and noticed bloodstains near the door.

After breaking the lock with the help of relatives, he discovered the two women dead inside the flat, lying in a pool of blood.

He alleged that Yogesh, who was unemployed, had murdered them and fled with the children.

Police later arrested Yogesh and recovered his blood-stained clothes along with a pair of scissors believed to have been used in the killings.

Investigators said a domestic dispute appears to be the motive. Forensic and crime teams were called in, and further inquiry is underway.

Priya’s brother, Himalaya, told PTI that their mother had informed the family a day earlier that she would return after helping settle the dispute.

“We kept calling her the next morning, but neither she nor my sister answered. When we finally went there, we saw bloodstains on the lock. Inside, we found them soaked in blood,” he said.

He expressed shock over the crime: “My brother-in-law had killed them and fled with the children. Who does this? Everybody has fights in a marriage. They had been married for 17 years. But who kills their wife and mother-in-law like this? It is so inhuman.”
