No vote without voter ID: Trump vows new executive order amid plans to ban mail-in voting

Trump has announced plans to issue an executive order making voter ID mandatory and banning most mail-in ballots ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, a move that could reshape how federal polls are conducted in the United States.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he plans to issue an executive order mandating voter identification for all voters while moving to prohibit mail-in ballots ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Voter ID Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End.” He noted that his legal team is drafting the order to eliminate mail-in voting, calling such ballots “corrupt.”

Reiterating his stance, Trump added, “Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military.” He further urged the use of “paper ballot only” in his weekend post.

Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on the American electoral system, maintaining without evidence that the 2020 election—won by Joe Biden—was marred by widespread fraud. He and his Republican allies have alleged non-citizen voting on a large scale, though no proof has been provided.

For years, Trump has also demanded the end of electronic voting machines in favor of paper ballots and hand counts. Election officials, however, insist that such a shift would be slower, more expensive, and less accurate than machine tabulation.

Although Trump has vowed to act through an executive order, federal elections in the US are managed by individual states, raising questions over whether the president has the constitutional authority to enforce such sweeping changes.

The upcoming midterm polls on November 3, 2026, will serve as the first nationwide test of Trump’s agenda since his return to the White House earlier this year.
