Neanderthals’ brains were not the reason behind their extinction, suggests a shocking new study. Scientists believed that there were differences in terms of intelligence and cognitive abilities of Neanderthals that resulted in their extinction, but current studies disprove the old notion about the Neanderthals’ extinction. The reasons could be related to other issues, like climate change, interactions with other species, including Homo sapiens, among others. Neanderthals, brain size, evolution of man, extinction, cognitive abilities, Homo sapiens, archaeology, and palaeoanthropology are just some of the topics involved in the new study as well.

For many years, Neanderthals were viewed as having a lower level of intelligence compared to Homo sapiens, although the former had similar-sized brains, if not larger. However, a new study questions the assumption that a bigger brain size implies superior intellect.The article ‘Neanderthal brain size at birth provides insights into the evolution of human life history’ shows that although Neanderthals possessed large-sized brains, there could have been differences in brain structure.As reported by the researchers in the article:“Brain size does not directly translate to cognitive ability; structure and society matter just as much.”Thus, Neanderthals were perhaps not less intelligent but merely adapted differently.
New research on neanderthal extinction factors
The outdated view that Neanderthal extinction resulted from their intellectually inadequate brains has been steadily superseded by much more elaborate scenarios. These scenarios now suggest both environmental and demographic factors as potential contributing factors.For example, as reported in a study by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America:“The relatively small and fragmented groups of Neanderthals increased their vulnerability to environmental changes and stochastic events.”Environmental instability during the Late Pleistocene probably affected the available food sources and habitats. On the other hand, Homo sapiens might have been characterised by a wider range of social relationships and strategies for surviving.Also, the genetic evidence suggests interbreeding between the Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.
Role of social networks and adaptability
The other important distinction may be in social organisation. Anthropologists claim that Homo sapiens had more extensive and connected social systems, which facilitated communication and innovation.The lead scientists and anthropologists said:“Not only intelligence, but also the way in which people communicate, collaborate, and share information between groups matters.”Despite being very advanced, Neanderthals possibly lived in small and separated tribes, which hindered them from adapting as easily as Homo sapiens to new environments.
What this means for evolutionists and further studies
Such findings alter the way we view human evolution. It is certainly not just a case of “smarter people displacing dumber Neanderthals.”Instead, Neanderthals seem to have been an intelligent and adaptable species with a culture. The reason for the extinction of Neanderthals probably lies in environmental pressures, low population resistance, and competition, or even incorporation, between Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens.A review in the journal Current Anthropology concludes:“The Neanderthals did not fail cognitively. They became extinct as the result of an array of intersecting ecological and demographic contingencies.”This new evidence shows us how much has changed in the way we look at Neanderthals.
