Mukesh Chhabra opens up on negativity around ‘Ramayana’, ‘Dhurandhar’

Mukesh Chhabra slams rising troll culture, opens up on negativity around ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Dhurandhar’: 'Feel bad for everyone'

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who has been widely appreciated for his work on ‘Dhurandhar’, has now opened up about the intense negativity surrounding big-ticket films. Also associated with ‘Ramayana’, Mukesh didn’t hold back as he addressed the rising culture of online trolling and how it impacts filmmakers and artists alike.Speaking about the backlash faced by both ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Dhurandhar’, he shared with Hindustan Times, “The negativity is a bit too much these days. I don’t know ki yeh sab kaun karwaata hai, kaise karwaata hai. (I don’t know who is behind all this or how it’s being orchestrated.) People tend to overjudge. I don’t know why. It can happen to anyone these days. This troll culture has gained ground but I can’t really do anything to stop that. I feel bad for everyone.” His remarks highlight growing concerns within the industry about unchecked online criticism.Reflecting on how audiences react instantly to early footage, Mukesh pointed out how both films faced scrutiny even before release. “The moment they see a glimpse of a film, they start reacting. But you know what’s the best part? These trolls immediately disappear the moment a film releases. I feel both bad and scared because people can say anything about anyone today,” he said, recalling the chatter around ‘Dhurandhar’ before it hit theatres.

Criticism around ‘Ramayana’ teasers and visuals

‘Ramayana’ too faced its share of backlash when its teaser dropped, with criticism aimed at the VFX and Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama. Similarly, ‘Dhurandhar’ encountered negative buzz ahead of release, especially after paid previews were cancelled due to technical glitches. Post-release, certain scenes were questioned, which director Aditya Dhar later clarified were AI-generated and not part of the final cut.Despite the noise, Mukesh remains optimistic about the audience’s discernment. He emphasised that trolls form only a small fraction online and said the appreciation that followed ‘Dhurandhar’ far outweighed early criticism. According to him, “A good film cannot be stopped,” reinforcing his belief in content ultimately finding its audience.Amid the discussion, Mukesh also shared a casting wish, expressing his desire to bring Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor together on screen. He called the potential collaboration the “biggest film of the country,” hinting at the scale such a project could achieve.

About ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Ramayana’

Directed by Aditya Dhar, ‘Dhurandhar’ stars Ranveer Singh in a high-octane spy thriller that went on to become a blockbuster despite being labelled propaganda by some. The franchise has reportedly crossed Rs 3,000 crore, with its sequel continuing a strong theatrical run.On the other hand, ‘Ramayana’, helmed by Nitesh Tiwari, is among the most anticipated projects lined up for 2026. Featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Yash as Ravana, the epic is planned as a two-part saga, releasing during Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027 respectively.
