‘Patriot’, one of Mollywood’s most awaited films of 2026, is set to release in theaters on May 1 with a large ensemble led by Mammootty and Mohanlal. The update has drawn attention because the film already brings together major names from Malayalam cinema and has been discussed widely for its casting choices.

Suresh Gopi was first choice for ‘Patriot’ cameo

According to Onmanorama, the confirmation came during a press meet on Friday. Subhash George Manuel, who is backing ‘Patriot’ through Kichappu Films in association with Anto Joseph Film Company, said Mahesh Narayanan first discussed Suresh Gopi for the cameo when he pitched the story.Rumors had already suggested that Suresh Gopi was the original choice. Manuel’s comment now provides clear confirmation for those reports. The producer said the early talks around the role centered on casting Suresh Gopi before the part later changed direction.Mohanlal missed the press meet because he was in the US for a stage show. The event was attended by Mahesh Narayanan, Mammootty, Kunchacko Boban, Darshana Rajendran, Zarin Shihab, and Grace Antony.

Mohanlal’s cameo and ‘Patriot’ cast details

Mammootty recently revealed in an interview that he suggested Mohanlal’s name when the makers felt they needed a prominent actor from the North for the role. Reports said the character changed significantly during the writing stage and later became a larger-than-life figure in the final version.Mohanlal and Nayanthara were reportedly among the last actors to join the ensemble cast. The film’s cast has remained one of its biggest talking points ahead of release. At the same press meet, Grace Antony shared how she joined ‘Patriot’. She said Mahesh Narayanan noticed her when she visited the set to meet Mammootty and asked whether she would be interested in a role. “I said yes,” Grace recalled. Producer Anto Joseph later reminded Mammootty about Mahesh’s suggestion, and Mammootty believed Grace could handle the part.
