Johnny Somali is once again making headlines after his legal situation in South Korea took a more difficult turn. The streamer, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, has appealed his six-month prison sentence with labor. However, instead of helping him get out sooner, the appeal has led to him staying in detention for a longer time while the case continues in court. Reports say he is now held in very harsh conditions inside a detention center.Johnny Somali became known worldwide after his controversial livestreams in South Korea, where he caused public disturbance and faced several legal charges. Earlier in April 2026, he was found guilty of obstruction of business and distributing deepfake content. After this, he was sentenced to six months in prison with labor. But both he and prosecutors have now filed appeals, which means a new trial process could take many months or even over a year.

Johnny Somali’s appeal backfires as he stays in harsh South Korea detention center conditions

Instead of being released or moved to a lighter situation, the appeal has kept Johnny Somali inside a strict detention center. Reports describe the place as very tough, with six people sharing one small cell. There is only one shower available per week, and the food is very basic, mostly rice and soup. Prisoners also get only a short time outside, which makes the situation even more difficult. Legal experts say the appeal may actually make things worse for him in the short term. Since the court process can take a long time, he will likely stay in detention during the entire appeal period. Even if his sentence changes later, the time spent inside may not reduce his overall legal troubles much. The case has drawn a lot of attention online, especially because of the strict conditions and long legal process. Some reports also say that both Johnny Somali and prosecutors are pushing for different outcomes, which is why a second trial is now expected. For now, Johnny Somali remains in custody, waiting for the next stage of his legal battle. His appeal has not brought quick relief and has instead extended his time in what many are calling a very harsh detention environment.
