US shooting: 3 students injured near University of Iowa following brawl

At least three students were injured in a shooting near the University of Iowa early Sunday morning, according to police.The Iowa City Police Department responded to the 100th block of East College Street in downtown Iowa City at approximately 1.46 am (US local time) after receiving a report of a large fight. Officers who arrived on the scene heard gunfire.The circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear. Video circulating on social media appears to show a confrontation involving a large group, with several individuals punching and kicking others as bystanders urged them to stop. Additional video shows a large crowd fleeing the scene after the gunfire. First responders reported at least four people with gunshot wounds, according to scanner traffic recordings provided by Broadcastify, as reported by NBC News. Police said multiple victims were taken to local hospitals but did not confirm the total number of those injured.A spokesperson for University of Iowa Health Care confirmed that patients from the incident were received and are being evaluated but did not provide updates on their conditions.In a statement, University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson confirmed that three students were injured. The university also issued alerts urging people to avoid the area. “While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them,” Wilson said. “I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.”No arrests have been made, and police are asking anyone with information to contact the department. The probe is under way.“This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” said Kim Reynolds, who offered all the state’s resources to assist in the investigation.
