Parliament Alert: opposition meeting ahead of crucial women’s reservation vote at 4 pm today

A highly charged political atmosphere continues inside the Lok Sabha as three major bills, including the Women’s Reservation and delimitation-related constitutional amendments, are set for voting at 4:00 PM today. The second day of the special parliamentary session is witnessing intense political activity both inside and outside the House. Ahead of the decisive vote, leaders of the opposition alliance are holding a strategy meeting in the Parliament complex. The meeting is aimed at finalizing a coordinated stance on the bills, after a day of heated debates, sharp exchanges, and repeated disruptions in the House. The government maintains that the legislation is aimed at ensuring greater political representation for women and strengthening democratic participation. The ruling side argues that the Women’s Reservation Bill will pave the way for 33% representation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, marking a historic step in gender inclusion. Union Minister Annpurna Devi defended the bill in Parliament, stating that the government has consistently worked toward women-led development since 2014. She highlighted that while earlier attempts to pass similar legislation faced delays, the current government is committed to implementing it in a structured manner, with full effect expected in the coming years after necessary processes like delimitation. However, the opposition continues to question the timing and intent behind the bills, alleging that the linkage with delimitation and other structural changes raises constitutional and federal concerns. They argue that the government should prioritize clarity on population data and electoral restructuring before implementing such major reforms. With voting scheduled for later today, all eyes remain on Parliament as the outcome will determine the future of one of the most significant proposed electoral reforms in recent years.
