Parliament Update: Crucial vote on Women’s Reservation and delimitation bills set for 4 PM today

A high-stakes political showdown is unfolding in the Lok Sabha as voting on three key bills, including the Women’s Reservation and delimitation-linked constitutional amendments, is scheduled for 4:00 PM today. The second day of the special parliamentary session is expected to witness intense debate, disruptions, and sharp exchanges between the government and the opposition. The discussion continued late into the night on Thursday, with deliberations stretching until 1:00 AM. Today’s proceedings are likely to see major interventions from senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to strongly present the government’s position. The ruling government has defended the bills as a historic move to ensure greater political representation for women, proposing 33% reservation. However, the opposition has raised serious concerns over the inclusion of delimitation provisions alongside the reservation framework. Critics argue that linking the two could alter the federal balance and potentially disadvantage southern and smaller states. The numbers game remains crucial. In the Lok Sabha, the NDA currently falls short of the two-thirds majority required to pass a constitutional amendment bill. Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha, the ruling alliance does not have sufficient numbers on its own, making opposition support critical. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to all parties to rise above political differences and support the legislation, emphasizing that women’s empowerment should not be politicized. He also stated that the government is open to giving full credit to the opposition if the bill is passed unanimously. As political tensions peak, all eyes are now on the decisive vote later today, which will determine the fate of these landmark proposals.
