US President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, CNN reported. The memorandum, addressed to the Secretary of Homeland Security, authorized the discontinuation of security procedures for Kamala Harris effective September 1, 2025.

Under federal law, former vice presidents receive protection for six months after leaving office. Kamala Harris’ coverage, which ended in July 2023, had been extended by then-US President Joe Biden through a private directive granting her an additional year of protection. Donald Trump’s order rescinds that extension.

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter stated.

Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff lost his Secret Service detail in July, in line with standard provisions for a Vice President’s spouse. Moreover, her home in Los Angeles will no longer be secured by federal agents. The cost of replicating such protection privately could run into millions of dollars each year.

High-Profile Book Tour Ahead

The revocation comes just weeks before Kamala Harris begins a multi-city tour for her memoir ‘107 Days’. Advisers expressed concern that without federal agents, Kamala Harris’ security team will lose not only personal protection but also access to threat intelligence and monitoring of potential risks across digital and physical spaces.

“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” her senior adviser Kirsten Allen said.

Security Concerns And Political Backlash

As the first woman and first Black woman to serve as US Vice President, Kamala Harris faced heightened security threats during and after her tenure, as per her aides. Those concerns have not diminished, they said as per CNN.
