A Beijing hair salon has become an unlikely symbol of patriotism ahead of China’s largest military parade in years, offering children military and national flag themed haircuts to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.

Hairdresser Wang Xueru told Reuters that the trend began when children started requesting shaved designs of tanks and the Chinese national flag in their undercuts earlier this month. As the requests grew, she decided to offer the carvings free of charge alongside normal trims.

“As long as the little one is willing, we can carve it for free,” she said, adding she hopes to spot her clients on television during the parade.

Parents have embraced the idea, describing the cuts as both fun and educational. Chen Nan, who brought her son for a themed trim, told Reuters, “For the children it also has great educational meaning. From the perspective of the motherland, a stronger China means we won’t be bullied anymore. And for my family, of course, peace is the most important thing- we just hope for lasting peace.”

China’s Massive Military Parade

The Victory Day parade will take place on September 3 in Tiananmen Square, commemorating the end of World War II and China’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. China’s President Xi Jinping will preside over the event, joined by Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and other leaders.

Thousands of troops and cutting-edge equipment, including fighter jets, missile defense systems and hypersonic weapons, will be showcased in a tightly choreographed display. The parade will honor wartime martyrs, project China’s growing military modernization and highlight its role in the global fight against fascism.
