Who is Dr Ashok Jain? Indian-origin paediatrician, who built a $750,000 school in his Rajasthan village

Dr. Ashok Jain

A childhood spent studying in modest conditions in Rajasthan has come full circle for a US-based doctor who is now reshaping education in his native village. Dr Ashok Jain’s journey moves from a rural classroom to an international medical career, and back to the same soil with a mission to create lasting change.Dr Ashok Jain, originally from Dadal village in Rajasthan’s Jalore district, began his early education at the very government school he would later rebuild. Decades ago, the school functioned with limited infrastructure, with students often sitting on the ground and basic facilities falling short of needs. Those early experiences stayed with him, shaping both his outlook and later decisions. In January 2020, during a visit to his village for a Republic Day event, Dr Jain returned to the same school and found conditions largely unchanged. Students were still sitting on the ground, much like he had decades earlier. “I went to the school, and it was just sad to see a lot of children still sitting on the ground like I used to 40 years ago,” he recalled. During the visit, then-principal Komal Kant Sharma pointed out the need to repair the school’s computer lab. After seeing the situation firsthand, Dr Jain committed ₹10 lakh to support the work, a step that soon expanded into a much larger vision. What followed was a shift in scale. Speaking to TOI, Dr Jain said, “After the programme, I reached home and discussed the idea with my mother and brother. Both told me how one classroom would not do justice to the future of hundreds of students. That is when I decided that we would build a small school instead.”Today, the same land has been transformed into a modern school campus developed under the Shree Chatrashanti Charitable Trust, with an overall investment of around $7,52,164 (₹ 7 crore). The facility has a capacity of 1,200 students from classes 1 to 12 and includes upgraded classrooms, improved infrastructure, a playground, and a design inspired by India’s Parliament. The project also includes a skill development centre aimed at creating employment opportunities in the region.

Academic background

Dr Jain pursued his higher education in the United States, building a strong foundation in both medicine and management. He completed his paediatric residency at New York Medical College’s Westchester Medical Center and became a board-certified paediatrician through the American Board of Pediatrics in 1998, with recertifications in 2005 and 2015 valid through 2027.Alongside his medical training, he earned an MBA in Business Administration from Fayetteville State University between 2002 and 2004. He also completed a physician executive certification from the Certifying Commission in Medical Management in 2011, further strengthening his leadership capabilities.

Professional journey

Dr Jain began his professional career as a paediatric intensivist and hospitalist at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he was promoted within two months to lead a paediatric intensive care unit. He later joined Cape Fear Valley Health System, where he handled clinical and operational responsibilities, contributing to a 37 per cent increase in ICU admissions and a 45 per cent rise in paediatric admissions between 2001 and 2003.In 2003, he founded KidzCare Pediatrics PC in North Carolina, which grew into a network of 26 practices with 180 full-time employees and 46 providers. The organisation handled around 1.5 million patient visits and maintained 70,000 active patients. He also led the development of paediatric facilities spanning more than 70,000 square feet, while launching 10 new centres and overseeing 20 acquisitions. His work later expanded into healthcare entrepreneurship and hospital development. He founded Pediatric Franchising Inc and went on to establish Indus Westside Hospital in Bengaluru, a 200-bed tertiary care facility built within 30 months at a cost of $14 million. The hospital included six operating rooms, 45 ICU beds, and a total built-up area of 120,000 square feet.More recently, Dr Jain has served as a partner and board member at US Pediatric Partners, overseeing operations across multiple states. In 2024, he founded Medladr Staffing to address global healthcare workforce shortages, focusing on the recruitment, training, and retention of healthcare professionals.Despite his global career, his connection to his village has remained constant. By rebuilding the school where he once studied, Dr Jain has turned a personal memory into a long-term investment in education, creating opportunities for future generations in his hometown.
