Sussanne on carving her own identity, facing criticism

Sussanne Khan on carving her own identity, facing criticism: 'People dismissed me as just another 'celebrity interior designer'

Sussanne Khan, a leading interior designer, overcame early criticism and financial hurdles to establish a successful business. Despite being initially dismissed as just a ‘celebrity designer,’ she proved her mettle, securing her first major project at 21. With family support, including from her brother Zayed Khan, who values her happiness, Sussanne’s 14-year-old venture remains strong, emphasizing balance and reinvestment.

Sussanne Khan has long stepped out of the shadow of being Hrithik Roshan’s ex-wife to establish herself as a successful entrepreneur and one of India’s leading celebrity interior designers.

Early passion for design

Growing up with her mother, a renowned interior designer, Sussanne developed an eye for colors and design by the age of five. Despite this early exposure, breaking into the profession was not easy.In 2011, Sussanne launched India’s first conceptual home store, offering a unique approach to design beyond just selling furniture. In the early days, she faced significant criticism, with many dismissing her as merely a ‘celebrity interior designer’ and unaware of her professional background.

Overcoming financial challenges

In a recent conversation with Zero1 Hustle by Zerodha, she acknowledged that growing her business came with challenges, particularly on the financial side. While she excelled as an entrepreneur, she needed guidance with numbers, and her brother-in-law helped her navigate the financial aspects of her venture.Khan further admitted that many doubted her early on, warning that her efforts and investment might not succeed. However, after 14 years, her business remains strong. She emphasizes that while money comes and goes, maintaining balance and reinvesting in the business is crucial.

Early career milestones

She also reflected on her early career, starting with unpaid internships and working at her mother’s company, designing single rooms. By 21, she secured her first major project—an entire apartment that earned her Rs 2 lakh. This breakthrough, though done without a store and relying on word-of-mouth, gave her confidence and visibility.

Family support

Recently, in an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Zayed Khan shared that he has known Hrithik Roshan since they were 12, even before Hrithik became close to his sister Sussanne. Reflecting on their bond, he expressed support for his sister’s choices, saying he is happy she has found love again and values her happiness above all else. Go to Source
