Vials labelled HIV, Covid‑19, Ebola: China-linked biolabs found in unauthorised facilities in US

Thousands of vials labelled HIV, Covid‑19, Ebola: China-linked biolabs found in unauthorised facilities in US

A secret biological laboratory found in a suburban Las Vegas home, apparently linked to a similar unauthorised facility in California, has alarmed officials who warn that the United States may be dangerously unprepared for hidden bioterror threats. On January 31, police in Las Vegas raided a five‑bedroom house in a quiet residential area after several people who had stayed there became “deathly ill”, according to the Daily Mail. Officers found multiple refrigerators, unknown liquids in bottles and jugs, and laboratory‑style equipment inside a garage that had been converted into a makeshift biolab. More than 1,000 samples were sent to the National Bioforensic Analysis Centre for testing, as authorities continue to examine what substances were present. The property manager, 55‑year‑old Ori Solomon, was arrested after police said they also discovered a cache of weapons in the house. He has been charged with disposing and discharging hazardous waste and, because of his visa status, being a prohibited person in possession of firearms. His lawyer says that Solomon was not involved with the lab.The Las Vegas discovery has direct links to a much larger investigation in Reedley, California, where an illegal biolab was uncovered in late 2022 and investigated in 2023. Local officials found thousands of vials containing biological substances with labels including malaria, HIV, Covid‑19 and Ebola, along with about 1,000 lab mice believed to have been used for testing. The Reedley facility was associated with Jia Bei Zhu, a Chinese national who faces federal charges in connection with the California lab and an unrelated scheme to sell unapproved medical tests. Court documents revealed Zhu had received large, unexplained payments from Chinese banks while running the clandestine operations. He entered the United States under an alias after fleeing Canada in 2015, where he was fined for theft of American intellectual property.Phone records indicate Zhu, still in custody, called the Las Vegas property nearly 400 times in the past year, though his attorney says he was unaware of illegal activity at that location. To date, there is no direct evidence that the substances found in either lab were being used to develop biological weapons. The FBI has stated that many of the materials recovered from the Las Vegas property appeared to be connected to the manufacture of Covid and pregnancy test kits as well as influenza vaccines, but some samples could not be tested because they had degraded. The FBI hence ended their investigation.
