Assam assembly elections 2026: Crorepati candidates including CM in fray but richest name will surprise you

As Assam gears up for the 2026 assembly elections, a glance at candidate affidavits shows a strong presence of crorepatis in the fray — including chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. However, while the CM figures among the wealthiest contenders, he is far from the top of the list, with several candidates declaring significantly higher assets.Topping the chart is Congress candidate Rahul Roy with assets exceeding Rs 261 crore, followed by AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal at over Rs 226 crore. The list also includes names from across party lines, underscoring the dominance of high-net-worth candidates in the state’s electoral landscape. Here’s the list of top 10 richest candidates:

Name Party name Constituency Total assets (in Rs)
Rahul Roy INC Hailakandi 261 crore+
Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal AIUDF Binnakandi 226 crore+
Jayanta Khaund INC Rongonadi 67 crore+
Sewli Mohilary Bodoland Peoples Front Kokrajhar (ST) 63 crore+
Rojy Ahmed AITC Hajo-Sualkuchi (SC) 54 crore+
Nandigiri Bhuyan IND Sissiborgaon 47 crore+

Ashok Singhal BJP Dhekiajuli 34 crore+
Shri Naba Kumar Doley BJP Dhakuakhana (ST) 33 crore+
Aminul Haque Laskar INC Sonai 30 crore+

Elections in Assam are scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4. Considered a crucial contest, the polls are expected to witness several high-profile battles that could significantly influence the state’s political trajectory. Central to the election is a closely watched face-off between CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, seen as a key test of whether the BJP can secure a majority on its own.
