Mexico’s Senate session ended in chaos on Thursday when shouting quickly escalated into shoving and punches between rival lawmakers.

The clash erupted after Alejandro “Alito” Moreno, leader of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), confronted Senate president Gerardo Fernández Noroña of the ruling Morena party.

The altercation unfolded as legislators were singing the national anthem to close proceedings.

Livestreamed footage showed Moreno approaching Fernández Noroña, insisting, “I’m asking you to let me speak,” before grabbing his arm.

The presiding officer pulled back, warning, “Don’t touch me,” but soon both men were pushing each other, with Moreno knocking over a photographer in the scuffle.

Another legislator joined in, swinging at Fernández Noroña as he attempted to retreat.

The Senate president later told reporters the fight followed a “difficult debate” over allowing foreign armed forces to operate in Mexico.

He accused Moreno of physically assaulting him and threatening to kill him, adding: “He hit me and said, ‘I’m going to beat the shit out of you, I’m going to kill you.’”

Fernández Noroña said he would convene an emergency session on Friday and seek the expulsion of Moreno and three other PRI members involved in the altercation.

Moreno, however, claimed it was Fernández Noroña who threw the first swing.
