Australia has openly voiced its opposition to US tariff measures, with the country’s Trade Minister Don Farrell confirming that Canberra has already raised the issue with Washington. Speaking to News18, Farrell said his government firmly rejects tariffs imposed on Australia and India, stressing that free and fair trade must remain the guiding principle.

“We believe in free, fair and open trade. We do not support tariffs, whether they are on Australia or on India. The 10 per cent tariff imposed on Australia is not the right way to proceed. We have communicated this to the US and will continue to press our case,” Farrell said.

The statement comes just a day after Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also underlined that Canberra does not support tariffs, signaling a clear and coordinated pushback against Washington’s protectionist stance.

Focus on India Ties

Farrell emphasised that in the current global climate, it is vital to work with like-minded nations that share a commitment to free trade. He highlighted ongoing negotiations with India under the SICA framework, expressing confidence in a “positive outcome.”

“I had two virtual meetings with Minister Piyush Goyal, and I believe our goodwill and the international situation will help us extend the agreement. I will also invite Minister Goyal to Australia,” Farrell said.

He described Australia as “a lucky country” with vast reserves of critical minerals and pointed to India’s vast market as the world’s largest democracy. According to him, both countries are entering a “golden era” of bilateral relations.

Growing Confidence in India

Within Australian diplomatic and political circles, there is a growing acknowledgment of India’s importance and trust in Australia’s transparency. Farrell underlined Canberra’s intent to boost two-way investments, noting that opportunities lie in critical minerals, technology, and broader trade partnerships.

“This is a golden era for India–Australia relations. Our partnership is now at its strongest,” he remarked.

Farrell’s comments also suggested that protectionist policies such as the tariff measures associated with US President Donald Trump are unlikely to find support among Australia and other free-trade advocates.
