Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week, during his upcoming visit to China, his first in over seven years.

PM Modi will travel to Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The visit comes as India and China continue efforts to ease tensions that have persisted since the violent border clashes of 2020.

The recent easing of tensions between India and China—after five years of border standoffs—combined with renewed tariff pressure on New Delhi from the Trump administration, has fueled anticipation of a constructive meeting between PM Modi and Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the upcoming SCO summit.

According to a Reuters report, citing foreign ministry official Tanmaya Lal, India’s key focus areas at the summit will be trade, connectivity, and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Tianjin Show

Xi is set to host over 20 world leaders at the regional security gathering in Tianjin beginning Sunday, projecting the forum as a show of Global South unity amid Donald Trump’s disruptive trade policies, while also offering sanctions-hit Russia another opportunity for diplomatic engagement.

Alongside Xi and Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia are expected to attend.

According to the Chinese foreign ministry, this year’s meeting will be the largest in the SCO’s history since its formation in 2001.

Once limited to a small grouping of six Eurasian states, the SCO has since expanded to 10 permanent members and 16 dialogue or observer nations.

Its mandate has also grown beyond security and counter-terrorism to include economic, strategic, and military cooperation.
