‘The Pitt’ Sepideh Moafi talks coming from a refugee background to landing acting projects: ‘I couldn’t believe that I was living this life’

Actress Sepideh Moafi, known for her role as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi in ‘The Pitt’, shared her journey from an Iranian refugee family to Hollywood. She detailed the challenges of her upbringing and her unexpected casting in the popular show, which came just after a digital detox retreat, leading to an eight-month commitment.

‘The Pitt’s Sepideh Moafi has become a fan favorite after her entry this new season. Starring as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, Moafi felt truly connected to her role and was extremely grateful for landing it out of nowhere. In a recent interview, the star detailed how she landed ‘The Pitt’, and how her overall journey has been since the beginning of her career.

While talking to PEOPLE, the actress delved deep into her life, citing that life was hard, coming from an Iranian refugee family. She shared that her parents had fled Iran after the Islamic Revolution in the early 1980s.“For any refugee family, it’s rarely a choice. The circumstances were so dire that they were forced to leave. We were very lucky to have a community when we came here, but it’s a loss of identity in so many ways,” she added. In 2013, after completing her education in the US, she landed a small role in ‘Blue Bloods’, which was her entry into the world of acting. She added, “I couldn’t believe that I was living this life. And then I booked The Deuce.”

How Sepideh Moafi got to know about the role on ‘The Pitt’

The actress also touched upon how she got to know that she landed the role. She revealed during the interview that she had been on a week-long wellness retreat where they were not allowed to have any digital items. At the time, she had felt as if she had missed out on the opportunity. However, the night right before her flight, she got the call, and found out that she had landed a role in ‘The Pitt.’ “I was elated, and I frantically packed even more, because I was going to be in California for not one week, but eight months.” She concluded by adding that she went on the retreat for 8 days, and two days after it ended, she was on the sets of ‘The Pitt’, transforming into Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi.
