Why Indian-origin Democrat Arvind Venkat read from Isha Upanishad in Pennsylvania House

Rep Arvind Venkat read a prayer from Isha Upanishad at the Pennsylvania House.

Rep Arvind Venkat read a prayer from the Isha Upanishad at the Pennsylvania House Wednesday and said he wanted to say the prayer from the Hindu text as this year is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Penn Hills. The temple is the first freestanding Hindu temple that was built by Hindu immigrants in North America in 1976, Venkat said as he read out the Sanskrit text and then the English translation.Arvind Venkat is an Indian-born American physician and Democratic politician who serves in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He represents District 30 in Allegheny County, covering suburbs of Pittsburgh, and first took office in January 2023 after winning the 2022 election; he was re-elected in 2024.

Born on June 6, 1974, in Madurai, India, he later grew up in the United States, primarily in Michigan. He is noted as the first Indian-American to serve in the Pennsylvania legislature and one of the few physicians in the state assembly in recent decades. Before entering politics, Venkat built a career in emergency medicine. He earned degrees from Harvard University and received his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, followed by residency training at the University of Cincinnati. He has worked as an emergency physician with the Allegheny Health Network and has been affiliated with Allegheny General Hospital. In addition to clinical work, he has held academic and leadership roles, including teaching emergency medicine and serving in leadership positions with the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Clear path to re-election

Arvind Venkat has a clear path to reelection this fall as a judge recently ruled that his Republican challenger Ehab Akkary did not meet the residency requirements to hold office as a state legislator. Pennsylvania law requires a candidate for the state House to have been a state resident for four years, and a resident of the district they hope to represent for one year. But last week, a Republican voter challenged whether Akkary had done so, citing the fact that Akkary, who had lived in West Virginia and still runs a cosmetic-surgery practice there, bought his Wexford home in 2023, and hadn’t registered to vote here until 2024.Akkary testified that he decided to live in Pennsylvania and spent most of his time here beginning in early 2022. He testified that he was in the midst of a divorce at the time and was working as a cosmetic surgeon for a practice in Cranberry, which paid for him to stay at a nearby hotel for more than a year.
