In a candid interview, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared her shock over the sudden scrapping of the highly anticipated ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot, a project she tirelessly worked on for four years. She elaborated that the journey was marred by an executive producer’s overt negativity toward the original series, complicating creative progress and ultimately leading to the project’s downfall.

With the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot officially on the shelves, fans have been wondering why the project was abruptly shut down. Only days after the news was confirmed, lead star Sarah Michelle Gellar opened up about the matter and shared her thoughts on the reboot’s cancellation.

While talking to PEOPLE about the latest updates on the ‘Buffy’ reboot, Geller could not believe the news herself. She plays the lead role of Buffy in the original series, which was a major hit at the time of its release. She further shared that the news of the reboot’s cancellation was abrupt, and something that “nobody saw coming.”She also uncovered that the news came at a very off time for her, as she was at one of the premieres for her latest film ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.’ She added, “I was just about to take the stage in front of all the fans. Hulu had decided not to move forward with the Buffy revival. Let me tell you, nobody saw this coming.”She and Chloe Zhao, who recently worked on the award-winning film ‘Hamnet’, had been working on the project for the past four years. Geller added that Zhao helped her understand the reboot and had managed to get her onboard the idea. Earlier, she had never really thought of returning to Sunnydale (the town in the series), even though fans had been asking about it for years now. “And I’d like to use this moment also to say that Ryan Kiera Armstrong is a superstar. I’m gutted that no one will see her as a slayer,” she concluded.

She shared that the person whom she did not name would often let his disdain over ‘Buffy’ be known to everyone. She added, “So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn’t watch it.”
