Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) on Monday has begun a pan-India public road test programme for its upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV, marking the start of large-scale verification of the vehicle under real-world Indian driving conditions.

The prototype of the electric SUV, based on the globally unveiled Honda 0 α concept shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, will be tested across highways, city roads and varied terrains in the country.

According to the company, the trials will assess durability, ride and handling, efficiency and overall reliability. The vehicle will also undergo evaluation in extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures and monsoon environments. Charging performance across different charging infrastructure will also be tested.

“India has unique driving and climate conditions, and it is important for us to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments,” said Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO, Honda Cars India.

The electric SUV is being developed for both urban and lifestyle use and is planned for global introduction in FY2026–27. India and Japan are among the key target markets, with the model expected to be manufactured in India for both domestic sales and exports.
