Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement late Tuesday night and the internet couldn’t quite handle it. The star couple pulled off a big surprise on their fans by announcing their engagement in a joint post that simply read “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

As soon as the post dropped, fans, friends, celebrities, and Swifties at large took to the ‘Gram to share their love and best wishes to the happy couple. However, many noted glitches in the app. This sparked buzz that the post quite literally ‘broke the internet’. With the post ranking among the fastest-growing in Instagram’s history, with an estimated 3,450 likes per second, the post now boasts of over 21 million l ikes. The overwhelming traffic reportedly caused the platform to briefly crash, according to Meta.

“Turns out Instagram needed to process this news, just like everyone else,” a company spokesperson joked.

The post features photos of the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis, down on one knee, popping the question to Swift. The photos from their engagement show the couple in a dreamy and romantic setting amidst huge floral arrangements. For the engagement, Travis rocked white shorts and a blue t-shirt while Swift, wore a flowing white-and-black striped dress. The singer also showed off her engagement ring — an oval-cut diamond set on a gold band, estimated to be around $500,000.

Taylor’s most liked post

The announcement has already eclipsed some of Swift’s previous viral moments, including the reveal of her The Tortured Poets Department album cover, which drew 15 million likes.

Most liked posts on Instagram

According to data reports from CNET, the post is now on track to become one of Instagram’s most-liked posts of all time. The current record is held by soccer legend Lionel Messi. His photo celebrating Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory has over 74 million likes. Messi also holds the third spot with another World Cup photo. The second most-liked post is a photograph of the egg. That image gained over 60 million likes in 2019. The engagement post, which has a current count of over 21 million likes, could soon join this exclusive list.

Breaking records

Earlier this month, Swift appeared on Kelce’s New Heights podcast with his brother Jason, drawing 1.3 million concurrent viewers on YouTube — the highest for any podcast to date.

Taylor and Travis’ romance

Swift and Kelce’s romance began in July 2023, Kelce revealed on the podcast that he had tried, unsuccessfully, to give Swift a friendship bracelet during her Eras Tour stop in Kansas City.
